Meet Lena!
Where are you located and what’s your favorite thing about your city?
I’m a California transplant based in Columbia, MD (suburb of Washington DC). I love how accessible everything is in my town; I’m a five minute walk to a lake, shopping, and restaurants.
Why did you choose to join Quora?
Initially I chose to join Quora because I liked their remote-first culture (and I vowed to never work in an office again). However, as I started to interview and meet with others, I chose Quora because of the wonderful people and the opportunity to own the privacy function. Quora offered me the perfect balance of autonomy and support.
What is your role at Quora and what do you do in that role?
I’m on Quora’s legal team, but more specifically, I’m Quora’s Privacy Counsel and Data Protection Officer. I lead, develop, and manage all aspects of Quora’s growing privacy program. I work on achieving compliance objections, improving processes, drafting policies, reviewing contracts, and conducting privacy risk assessments. My role is unique because I partner with a variety of teams (e.g., Security, IT, Data Infra, People, ProdOps, Engineering, and Ads) to ensure their projects embed privacy principles.
What kind of impact does your team have on the company as a whole?
My work helps instill a culture of privacy by design where the privacy of our users is at the forefront of product development across the company. I’ll continue developing the privacy program as Quora evolves.
What’s something your team has done that you’re particularly proud of?
I’m proud at how quickly and effectively the legal team was able to advise on Poe. The legal team’s ability to be agile and creative helped launch the product, not hinder it.
How would you describe the culture at Quora?
Quora is transparent, nimble, and collaborative. Everyone is helpful and willing to jump in, even when they were not formally tasked with the project.
Which one of our core values at Quora do you most resonate with?
I resonate with all of them, but if I had to choose one it would be pragmatism. It’s critical to be pragmatic as in house counsel, especially in the privacy field where the legal landscape is rapidly changing. I view my role as someone that needs to provide clear, quick, and actionable guidance to help unblock or improve projects.
What do you like to do outside of work?
I enjoy baking, traveling, learning about real estate, and hanging out with my dog. I’m also trying to get back into figure skating after many years off.
