Meet Gina!
Where are you located and what’s your favorite thing about your city?
I’m currently located in the Austin, TX metro area. My absolute favorite thing about living here is that it’s a foodie city! Some people eat to live, but I live to eat.
What is your role at Quora and what do you do in that role?
I work on the IT team as a Systems Administrator. My day consists of installing and configuring software and hardware, monitoring and maintaining them, creating and managing accounts, troubleshooting technical issues, etc. Needless to say, I always have something to do. And I get to do what I enjoy – being a nerd!
Why did you chose to join Quora?
Quora’s mission is “to share and grow the world’s knowledge.” This is something that I highly value because I’m always aspiring to grow and develop my skills. I chose to join Quora because the company fosters an environment that allows employees to learn and provides opportunities to try new things.
What kind of impact does your team have on the company as a whole?
I like to think that the IT team is the glue that holds Quora together. We work hard to make sure that the company stays secure and keep all integral systems up and running so that we can ensure productivity operates at the highest efficiency. And if something does happen to break, you can count on us to diligently work on getting it fixed as quickly as possible.
How would you describe the culture at Quora?
Like family! Even if you’re talking to someone that isn’t on your team or that you work directly with, it’ll still feel like you’re talking to a friend. Everyone’s always so friendly! And expect to learn something new because there are so many intelligent people at Quora.
What is something your team has done that you’re particularly proud of?
Something we are constantly working on is process improvement. We cross-collaborated with the HR team to successfully revamp the onboarding process at Quora. This was achieved by replacing manual processes with automation. By automating, we were able to: reduce redundancy, maintain accurate record retention, and ensure proper tracking and completion of onboarding tasks. This resulted in optimization of the usual time spent for onboarding and created more free time to focus on other tasks, and most importantly to assure we provide a smooth onboarding process for any new hires joining the Quora team.
What has contributed to being successful in your role at Quora?
The biggest contribution to my success at Quora is that I’m always being encouraged. There are times where I will second guess my abilities to do certain things, but I’ll get a gentle push to attempt it with the comfort of knowing that I have support from my peers whenever I need it. Not only that, but being encouraged to fail! It’s so reassuring to know that it’s understood failure will sometimes happen, and that’s ok. I think this is crucial for someone to develop resilience, learn to adapt, and cultivate innovation.
What do you like to do outside of work?
I try my best to balance my remote work life by being out as much as I can, so in my free time I'll try to dabble in some outdoor activities like hiking, kayaking, or exploring what Austin has to offer. But what I really enjoy doing is finding good coffee and food! Thankfully, at Quora I'm also encouraged to go on vacation so I try to travel as much as I can. Next trip I'm planning is my dream trip to Japan!
